Overview
NotebookLM
Google’s AI research notebook: ask questions grounded in the materials you upload, and generate podcast-style Audio Overviews, Video Overviews, and mind maps.
NotebookLM is one of Google’s rare “slow-burn hits”: instead of being a general-purpose chatbot, it keeps the AI working strictly within the materials you upload. Drop papers, web pages, videos, Word docs, and spreadsheets into a notebook, and it becomes a research assistant that has read only those sources—every answer comes with traceable citations, making it a natural fit for literature reviews, exam prep, and industry research.
What truly took it mainstream is Audio Overview: one click turns dry documents into a podcast conversation between two AI hosts, letting you “listen through” a stack of reports on your commute—now available in 80+ languages, with interactive chime-ins. With Video Overviews, mind maps, data tables, and flashcard quizzes added one after another, it has grown from a note-taking tool into an all-in-one learning workstation.
2026 is NotebookLM’s year of “going agentic”: the June 2.0 upgrade brought in Gemini 3.5, Deep Research can now autonomously scour the web to gather and vet sources, a secure cloud environment handles code execution, and Studio outputs can be exported straight to PPT, Word, and Excel. The 1M token context has also been rolled out to all tiers, so loading in an entire book is no longer a problem.
The free tier offers 3 Audio Overviews per day and 100 notebooks—quite generous for light users—while heavy-duty researchers can upgrade to a Google AI subscription as needed. In the “AI notes” space, it remains the one most worth trying by default.
