Overview
Midjourney
The byword for artistic-grade image generation. V8 delivers a 5x speedup with native 2K, as the web app fully takes over from Discord.
Midjourney is the byword for “artistic-grade image generation” — it can’t outcompete Flux on photorealism or GPT Image on typography, but its aesthetic edge in atmosphere, composition, and emotional expression remains unshaken, and in 2026 it still leads the stylization dimension across multiple head-to-head reviews by a wide margin. The current flagship is V8.1: V8 (March 2026) brought a roughly 5x speedup and native 2K resolution, while V8.1 pushes sref / moodboard style consistency to “ultra-stable” levels, with HD mode 3x faster and 3x cheaper. The product’s center of gravity has fully shifted from Discord to the web — conversational creation, a Grid focus view, plus image-to-video launched in mid-2025 (four 5-second clips per generation, extendable to about 21 seconds).
Pricing is paid-only, with no free trial: Basic $10, Standard $30, Pro $60, Mega $120 per month, with annual billing at roughly 20% off. From Standard up, plans include unlimited slow generations in Relax mode; Stealth mode (keeping generations private) is only available on Pro and above. Go with Basic for a low-cost entry, or Standard if you want unlimited generations to build a creative habit.
The other half of its value lies in the community: every image in the public gallery reveals its full prompt, serving as both an inspiration library and the best prompt-writing textbook — something standalone generation tools simply can’t offer. Founder David Holz has stuck to the independent-lab route with no outside funding, self-sustaining since 2022.
Three things to note: generations are public by default, so always use Stealth mode for confidential material; companies with annual revenue over $1 million need the Pro or Mega plan for a commercial license; and the copyright lawsuit filed by Disney and Universal in June 2025 is still ongoing — for commercial assets, it’s advisable to keep a human post-processing step in the workflow to reduce risk.
